Derandomization Of RANSAC

mainLet’s say you are a clothes designer and you want to design a pair of jeans. Since you are new to all this, you go out and collect a bunch of measurements from people to see how to design your jeans as far as sizing is concerned. One aspect of this project would be to see how the height of a person relates to the size of the jeans you are designing. From the measurements you took from those people, you notice a certain pattern that relates height of a person to the overall size of the jeans. Now you generalize this pattern and say that for a given height, a particular size is recommended. To deduce the pattern, you just took a bunch of points and drew a line through them so that it is close to all those points. Pretty simple right! What if there are a few points that are way off from all the other points? Would you consider them while deducing your pattern? You will probably discard them because they are outliers. This was a small sample set, so you could notice these outliers manually. What if there were a million points?   Continue reading “Derandomization Of RANSAC”

Connecting With Kinect

If you haven’t experienced Kinect yet, do yourself a favor and just go do it! For people who have just landed on earth, Kinect is a motion sensing device for Microsoft XBox 360 video game console. You can check out the video here. Instead of using buttons or controllers to play video games, this device enables you to use your body. Your movements will be captured and the video game character will move accordingly. When Kinect first came out in 2009, it took the world by storm! How is it possible to capture our body movements so accurately without using any wires? How does it recognize our gestures?   Continue reading “Connecting With Kinect”

Peeking Into The Third Dimension With 3D Glasses

Instead of directly explaining it, I will take a different route this time. Let’s take a look at this conversation between Walter and Michael. In case you are not familiar with them, Walter is a mathematician and Michael is his friend who refuses to acknowledge that humans need complex mathematical models. This attitude of Michael doesn’t sit well with Walter and hence they are constantly at loggerheads over this issue. They were once walking along and they came across a multiplex.   Continue reading “Peeking Into The Third Dimension With 3D Glasses”

Understanding Camera Resolution

Cameras are being embedded everywhere. We find them on our phones, tablets, laptops and other types of gadgets as well. Digital cameras are getting sharper and smarter by the day. Some cameras capture good quality pictures while some cameras don’t. We frequently come across the camera specs which mention the ‘MP’ value of the camera. You understand the fact that a 12MP camera takes better pictures than a 5MP camera. Have you ever stopped to think what makes it better? More pixels means better pictures. Why exactly is that?   Continue reading “Understanding Camera Resolution”
